The Magi saw the sign… they saw the star.. the Magi were among other things, astronomers. They knew the stars and the constellations and the heavens above like the back of their hand. They watched and studied the night sky like no one else.
And one night they saw something miraculous. A star unlike any other. I don’t know what this star looked like, or how it shone or shimmered, but they knew immediately that this was not a normal star.
It was HIS star. The Messiah had come. The Heavens declare the Glory of God.
But they had been keeping an eye out. They were prepared. They were seeking the Lord.
Who wasn’t paying attention? The Religious leaders weren’t. They knew the scriptures but they missed the signs.
“The star was Christ’s star itself, but it also led others to Christ. It did this very much because it moved in that direction. It is a sad thing when a preacher is like a sign-post pointing the way but never following it, on his own account. Such were those chief priests at Jerusalem: they could tell where Christ was born, but they never went to worship him; they were indifferent altogether to him and to his birth.” (Spurgeon)
They weren’t seeking the Messiah. They were indifferent to the word of God. Are you?
Here is the thing…
”The celebration of Advent is possible only to those who are troubled in soul, who know themselves to be poor and imperfect, and who look forward to something greater to come." ~ Dietrich Bonhoeffer
So, are you looking forward to something greater to come? Something greater is coming.
Merry Christmas!
